The purpose of the mentor program is to develop good sportsmanship, improve skill level, and foster passion for hockey in the player(s) & team to which the mentor is assigned. The mentor will also recognize that their behavior on and off the ice will reflect these goals and that they will be in role model environment.
The 2013-2014 Foothills Flyers Mentor Program is kicking off!
What is our Mentor Program? This program is designed to allow our older kids (1995-2001 Birth Years) a chance to volunteer their time and give back to the game and their association. As we were growing up, we had many influences in our lives, especially as it relates to the sports we played. While coaches seem to leave a lasting impression, it is those older kids who we marvel over, and make us want to be like them. Our mentors are trained, and assigned to every team within FHA. Their volunteer hours are credited toward any requirements for public service by their high schools and middle schools. These mentors act as another coach on the ice, helping the head and assistant coaches execute their practice plan, and they become a part of that team. They are encouraged to attend some of that team's games, and that team is encouraged to attend some of their mentor's games.
While the program stresses the concepts of relationship building and volunteering, it also teaches organization and communications skills for the mentors themselves. It is important for them to manage their time properly, communicate with the head coach on a regular basis, and to take the initiative in asking what is required of them for each practice. The time requirements are approximately 2-4 hours weekly, or more if you desire and can fit it into your schedule. At a minimum, you should plan on attending at least one practice each week, and hopefully, a game here and there. There will be multiple mentors assigned to each team (based upon numbers of applications), so that a rotation can be established, and the team is always covered by a mentor for all of its activities.
For those of you who are new to this program, you will not be able to appreciate the satisfaction you will receive when you see your kids around the rink, and they come running over to you, saying "hey coach!", and give you a hug, or bump knuckles, until you experience being a mentor. Once you receive that smile from them, you become addicted to that good feeling, and you know you are making an impact on another younger person's life.
This program makes our association a closer and stronger community, it provides inspiration to all of those being mentored, and it teaches responsibility to all of those who are the mentors.
Once we receive the applications, which will be due by November 15th (you can drop them off at the FHA Office, email them to
, or bring them with you to the training class), all mentors will then be assigned to teams. Training for the new mentors will take place on Saturday, November 16th at 8:30 a.m., and Tuesday, November 19th at 6:30 p.m. The training will be 1.5 hours long, and will be performed in the Center Ice Room. We have provided two training dates to accommodate any possible conflicts with team practices or games, and have selected Tuesday and Saturday during a time when no FHA team practices. A new mentor will only be required to attend one of these sessions. Complete the application on the Website. If you have any questions, you are welcome to email (

We look forward to great participation in this program.
